The first trains for the underground railway system crossed the city in 1964 thanks to the efforts of the engineer Ercole Bottani, professor of Electric Engineering at Politecnico di Milano and CEO of the company Metropolitana Milanese Spa.
But the well-known look of the underground platforms, that became famous for the red tubular handrails, is also MADE IN POLIMI: the station interiors were designed by the architects Franco Albini and Franca Helg, both alumni from the Politecnico, with the collaboration of the graphic designer Bob Noorda. The project earned the designers the Compasso d’Oro award in 1964.
You can discover its story, along with many others, by visiting MADE IN POLIMI, the exposition that shows Politecnico di Milano’s past, present and future through its innovative projects: https://www.biblio.polimi.it/en/locations-and-times/made-in-polimi.
