PeakLens, the app developed by the Politecnico di Milano which uses augmented reality to recognise mountains, has won Huawei’s international “HMS App Innovation” contest.

You need only hold the profile of a single mountain or mountain range in frame through your camera, and the app will show you the characteristics of the visible peaks: everything from name to height, and even distance from the observer. PeakLens uses a sophisticated algorithm to analyse images based on artificial intelligence.

The app, which is both free of charge and ad-free, encourages mountain lovers to actively contribute to enhancing Open Street Map. Released in 2017, it has already been downloaded a total of over 800,000 times.
