Dopo 6 anni di interruzione, dovuta a motivi di sicurezza, sono ripresi gli scavi condotti dalla missione archeologica italiana a Umm al-Dabadib: i ricercatori di ABC Lab del Politecnico di Milano, insieme a quelli del Centro MUSA – Musei della Reggia di Portici dell’Università Federico II di Napoli, hanno quindi potuto raggiungere il sito fortificato tardo romano situato alla periferia dell’Oasi di Kharga, 600 km a Sud del Cairo in pieno deserto.

Gli scavi, condotti nell’ambito del progetto europeo LIFE – Living in a Fringe Environment, hanno l’obiettivo di indagare i resti del forte di confine romano e il sistema agricolo che lo sostentava; tra i risultati della campagna 2022 l’aggiornamento dei rilievi 3D dell’insediamento, uno studio del sistema di gestione dell’acqua potabile e i primi scavi archeologici realizzati all’interno del forte.

Excavations resumed at Umm al-Dabadib, Egypt

The team of the Italian Mission to Umm al-Dabadib resumed its archaeological work in Egypt, after 6 years of break due to security reasons: a joint mission of team members from ABC Lab, Politecnico di Milano and MUSA Centre of Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II reached the Late Roman fortified site located at the outskirts of the Kharga Oasis, located 600 km south of Cairo, in the middle of Egypt’s Western Desert

The excavations, conducted in the framework of the European project LIFE – Living in a Fringe Environment, are aimed at investigating the remains of the Late Roman Umm al-Dabadib settlement, that in the Fourth Century AD represented a portion of the southern boundary of the empire. The results of this mission include updated 3D surveys, a study of the local water management system and the first archaeological excavation of the interior of the Fort.
